Date questions

First meeting — what do you talk about?

Three ways to make it easy

  1. 01

Prepare just three or four questions — the conversation will carry the rest.

  2. 02

Ask one follow-up after each answer. "What did you like about it?" keeps things going.

  3. 03

Share about yourself in turn. Questions alone turn a date into an interview.

01

Hello · breaking the ice

The first five minutes. Start with what is easy to answer.

  • How was the trip over here today?

  • Do you come to this area often? Any favourite spots?

  • Do you pick from a menu quickly, or take your time?

  • What song have you been playing the most lately?

  • What is one small thing that has made you happy recently?

02

Work · everyday life

How someone spends their days says more than their job title.

  • What is the most interesting part of your work these days?

  • What do you usually do after work?

  • Are you a morning person or a night owl?

  • Could you share one moment at work you were proud of?

  • Do you have a favourite day of the week?

03

Interests · weekends

Shared interests make the next plan easy.

  • If you suddenly had a whole free day, what would you do?

  • Is there a hobby or interest you are really into lately?

  • Seen any good films or series recently?

  • Do you prefer time on your own or time with people?

  • What kind of exercise do you enjoy?

04

Travel · food

Great for long stories — and for a place to go together next time.

  • Of the places you have been, where would you go back to?

  • When you travel, do you plan everything or go with the flow?

  • If you could only pick one favourite food, what would it be?

  • Is there a restaurant you have been wanting to try?

  • Is there anything you don’t eat or don’t like?

05

A little deeper — from the second date

Once you are comfortable, questions that help you know the person.

  • What matters most to you these days?

  • How would your friends describe you?

  • What do you do when you are feeling down?

  • Do you like to keep in touch often, or now and then?

  • Where would you like to be in five years?

  • Is there something you would love to do with someone you care about?

Questions to save for later

Not bad questions — just too early for a first meeting.

  • Salary or wealth

your manager has already checked their work documents.

  • Past relationships

    they easily sound like comparisons.

  • Asking straight away about marriage timing or children

let it come up naturally later.

  • Comments on looks or body

    even compliments need care.

  • Debates on religion or politics

set them aside while getting to know each other.

  • Talking while looking at your phone

today, focus on the person in front of you.
